Summary

The General Foreman assists the Project Superintendent with the daily operation of a project site, including scheduling and procurement of materials and equipment. Directs supervision of production and manpower for self-performed work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Studies project specifications to plan procedures for construction on basis of starting and completion times and staffing requirements for each phase of construction, using knowledge of available tools and equipment and various building methods.
  2. Works with Operations to procure manpower for assigned project and is responsible for work assignments and crew mixes to manage labor costs as assigned.
  3. Directs procurement of tools and materials to be delivered at specified times to conform to work schedules.
  4. Meets with and directs supervisory personnel engaged in planning and executing work procedures, interpreting specifications, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays.
  5. Works with supervisory personnel to resolve complaints and grievances within the work force.
  6. Manages the project based on progress reports, materials used, and costs adjusting work schedules accordingly.
  7. Directs workers concerned with major maintenance or reconditioning projects for existing installations. Designates workers according to type of work, project, or construction activity directed.
  8. Works with the Superintendent and Manager of Operations to move personnel from project to project, minimizing hiring and layoffs.
  9. Ensures that company policies, such as safety policies, equal opportunity, and others, are implemented consistently.
  10. Ensures company quality standards and housekeeping requirements are maintained.
  11. Executes the work by supervising the Concrete Foreman, Concrete Finisher Foreman.
  12. Foresees potential design, construction, or scheduling problems and informs the superintendent.
  13. Clarifies discrepancies and questions concerning plans and drawings.
  14. Assigns personnel to ensure forms are straightened, plumbed and squared and that forms are aligned with grid lines.
  15. Assigns personnel to ensure correct elevation is maintained.
  16. Assigns personnel to check concrete for correct elevation.
  17. Assigns personnel to ensure wall forms are straightened, plumbed and squared and that forms are aligned with grid lines.
  18. Assign personnel to shoot grades on forms to required elevation.
  19. Assign personnel to ensure concrete is poured at correct rate and consolidated properly.
  20. Assign personnel to ensure concrete is vibrated correctly.
  21. Assigns personnel to instruct craftsman as to plans and specifications for the building and installation of blockouts and imbeds.
  22. Reads blueprints to determine measurements, sizes, locations, types of walls, footings, floors, etc.
  23. Utilizes carpentry math to calculate measurements required to construct facilities.
  24. Knowledge of concrete and its properties.
  25. Determines elevations through the use of builder levels, transits, lasers, etc.
  26. Possesses ability to manage people using communications skills, negotiating skills, and fair and reasonable management practices.
  27. Maintains a clean and safe project site by ensuring work area is kept clean and safe by assigned personnel.
  28. May confer with supervisors, engineering personnel, inspectors, and suppliers of tools and materials to resolve construction problems and to improve construction methods as assigned.
  29. May inspect work in progress to ensure that work conforms to specifications and to construction schedules.
  30. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. At least 5 years commercial construction experience.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of construction processes.
  3. Good driving record.
  4. Good knowledge of building codes and blueprints.
  5. Knowledge of subcontractors' scopes of work and tolerances.
  6. The ability to apply college level algebra concepts.
  7. Good written and oral communication skills.
  8. Has good problem-solving ability, showing the ability to deal with a variety of variables given general construction and concrete placement principles with little structure or direction and interprets a variety of complex instructions.
  9. The ability to proactively manage personnel issues.
  10. Good organizational skills.
  11. The ability to process information quickly and follow through with a course of action.
  12. The ability to perform essential duties and responsibilities efficiently, accurately, and safely with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing threat of harm to self or others.
  13. Must have good depth perception, field of vision, near acuity.
  14. Ability to understand and convey English commands, questions and instructions on an eighth-grade level regarding concrete construction.
  15. Works effectively as a member of the direct field workforce.
  16. Cooperates with co-workers to improve both the quality of work and the morale of the project site.
  17. Commits to and meets all scheduled attendance and production deadlines.
  18. Works diligently to perform in a safe manner according to Layton Construction guidelines.
  19. Exerts in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move object.

    1. Perceives the nature of sounds with no less than a 40db loss @ 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,00 Hz with or without correction. (Hear)

    2. Has high school diploma or equivalent.
    3. At least 3 years experience as a Foreman on commercial projects.
    4. Operates office equipment, such as computer, printer, fax, copier, and telephone.
